Benjamin Wetherill:
Nothing is straightforward about Ben Wetherill. Despite sporting the
classically gaunt features and clothes of a 1930s English poet there is no
easily explained centre to his mix of originals and covers.
Songs stop and change time signature and direction, his voice small and
quiet but demanding attention, his influences deep and wide, a bit of John
Fahey, some George Formby, old-time acoustic blues men, English folk, Woody
Guthrie. . .
There’s more to Ben than meets the eye. Steeped in the past but not trapped
by it, he seems to approach everything from different angles at the same
time, a lyrical approach which attempts to see life in the round.
It’s all done so easily and quietly and delicately all you notice at first
is his shirt and tidy cardy and sly sense of humour.
