tasty 10 - the first 10

The Hate Brigade
Jason Sweeney from Glasgow's Irn Bru fuelled punk-posters The Hate
Brigade waxes lyrical about death, despair, neo-plastics and Jocky Wilson... |
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
Emmmm, this is always a tough one which we
get asked a lot. There's three of us in the band, and we pretty much have
everything split equally - writing, singing, playing, performing, - so what
you end up with is not a bunch of songs that are totally different, but you
definitely get different energies in each song, which is great as it keeps
everything fresh. The only real common factor is that we're all a bit
disturbed, and this darker side definitely shows in our music, and the
themes of the songs. Most of our songs seem to deal with death, despair or
torture of some sort, which also might explain our name, but it's only the
positive, more embracing side of these issues that comes out in our music.
If I had to categorise our style i'd put it somewhere in the midst of The
Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Joy Division, Elvis Costello
and New York Dolls. (if that's possible) I'm sorry it's not in a nutshell,
or a bushel for that matter. |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
To be recognised for my talents and opinions
(which could also be considered talent). Isn't that what everyone does it
for? |
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
NICE QUESTION. Emmmm...i don't
know......Jeremy Beadle and Kylie Minogue. You could call it "Neoplastics at
War" and raise lots of money for the associated charities. |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
If the hall's empty then I don't know 'cos I
wasn't there, unless it's was my band, but we've got no intention of going
near Stoke, although I do like a nice piece of Spode Cornucopia. They could
be a band of mime artists. |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
I was told by a kid recently that I look like
Jack Black, which I found terribly insulting, and since he probably won't be
able to do a Scottish accent, i'd go for Jocky Wilson. |
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
I've always though Supergrass have been
immensely underrated and have never fully gotten the plaudits they deserve.
I think it's because of the whole 'britpop' thing, they seemed to be
overshadowed by most of the bands at that time, and that seems to have stuck
with them. Their last album Life On Other Planets was astounding, and yet it
gets nowhere near as much hype that Oasis' next album is getting, yet Oasis
are the ones who have been consistently underachieving since Morning Glory.
I think it's more of a reflection on the way publicity and hype seems to
produce more reaction than substance nowadays. There's not a lot of new
stuff out there that I like.
In terms of other stuff, there's a lot of bands up
here in Glasgow that are laden with innovation and talent (Mother and the
Addicts, The Owsley Sunshine and Dead Fly Buchowski to name but a few) but
seem to lose exposure in favour of the new 'in' thing. |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
Difficult, but i'll have a go. Here I go,
subjecting myself to scrutiny as one always does in these kind of things. In
no particular order:
1) This Year's Model - Elvis Costello
2) Abbey Road - The Beatles
3) Radiator - Super Furry Animals
4) Ogden's Nut Gone Flake - Small Faces
...and one for the moment
5) The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike |
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
There was a bit of fighting, but.....
1) It's Not Too Beautiful - The Beta Band
2) Seven & Seven Is - Love
3) Pump It Up - Elvis Costello
4) Breaking The Rules - Ludus
5) Expressway to Yr. Skull - Sonic Youth |
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
Obviously MP3, and the technology that
progresses from that, is the way forward, but I'd never get rid of my CD's
or vinyl. So where does that leave us? |
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
I dunno, but if it was this country i'd
firstly cancel the £1.5 billion Olympic games bid. I'd take whatever money
was left from it's fund to buy and convert unused office space into
affordable housing, implementing a re-housing scheme for the homeless. I
reckon it would solve not all, but a lot of the homelessness problem in the
country. How great am I? Doubt it would be effective in just a day though. |

Daniel Fell
www.danielfell.com |
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
I guess it’s guitar based pop with bits of
Rock & Roll, Country, Folk, Bossa and whatever else I feel like. If you
would like to investigate further, you good always visit
www.danielfell.com. There, got the plug out of the way in
the first question. |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
I blame The Beatles really. I saw Help and
thought it would be all screaming girls, Egyptians and skiing but sadly
that’s not the case. |
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
John Prescot would make a great wrestler and
Billie Piper, because she’s Billy Piper. |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
They do, and it’s usually a better sound than
they’d make at a packed out show. I pity the people of Stoke for not going
to see them. |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
A younger, hairier Mark Williams. |
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
Well Jen and Jon from Stuffy / The Fuses have
a new band called Maersk who are sounding good. It’s just the two of them
playing guitar and cello at the moment but they’re going to get some more
people in soon. Other than that, Michaelmas, Anechoic and Lin Sangster with
her Bad Anorak 404 stuff. She has a new album called All In Miniature out
soon on Snowstorm which is a must for anyone into twee kind of sounds. |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
That’s one of those things that changes for
me every day. Today I’d say Mutations by Beck, Lazy Ways by The Marine
Girls, Forever Changes by Love, Friends by The Beach Boys and I know it’s
cheating but I’d have to have Motown Chartbusters Volume 3. |
Who are your heroes and villains? |
My heroes are Muhammad Ali, William Blake and
Patrick Viera. My villains are any religious fundamentalists who kill for
what they believe in. |
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
Well, I don’t have a computer and my record
deck is broken so I reckon that makes it CD by default. |
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
I like those really old laws like you can
shoot a Scot on a hill on a Sunday afternoon with a crossbow. I’d add some
more like that. |

The
Soho Dolls
Fellow Robbie Williams haters and purveyors of electro goth rock, the
Soho Dolls, fit in time between releasing their latest single 'Stripper' and
starting a UK tour to answer our very un-gothic questions...
www.thesohodolls.com |
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
We’d describe ourselves as
electro-rock. But in Italy, France and Germany they call us ‘New Wave Goth’ |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
Making music and performing is
all we want to do. It’s the best job in the world – you get to travel, play
and party with people who’re your best friends and you touch people with
your work. |
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
We loathe Robbie Williams. So
the other guy will have to be someone who can put him out of his misery.
Robbie Williams v Geoffrey Dahmer (America’s notorious serial killer). |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
Is this something to do with a
tree falling in a forest? If the band plays the empty hall they do make a
sound but only if the said musicians aren’t deaf. |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
Maya: Christina Ricci
Ana: Milla Jovovich
Toni: Shane McGowan if he got some teeth. Otherwise Johnny Depp.
Gavin: the ghost of Carey Grant |
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
We’ve played with Selfish Cunt
– they’re something special. Swedish band The Knife are bloody brilliant.
The Noisettes of London are the most talented musicians and performers.
Special Needs are beautifully melodic and romantic. |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
Nirvana: Smells like teen
spirit, Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: The
Boatmans Call, Roxy Music : For your Pleasure: Rolling Stones: exile on main
street |
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
We don’t have such facilities
in our band-wagon.. but if we did.. Heaven and Hell: The Who, heartbeats:
the knife, what a wonderful world: louis Armstrong, shoot speed kill light:
primal scream, die sonne: rammstein |
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
Vinyl – cos it’s great to have
big artwork. And 10 inches are the sweetest things. |
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
Ban smoking in bars, clubs and
pubs. All rubbish has to be recycled. Massive fines for littering. Extend
pub opening times till very late. Allow bands to fly-post and stick flyers
where they used to be able to before the big advertising morons bought
public space. ban under 18s from drinking fizzy sugary drinks - have you
heard the abusive racket they make on public transport?!! or is just our
eyeliner...? |

Dan from Deathships
http://www.myspace.com/deathships |
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
If I had
to describe my music I would say that its a indie/folk/country/pop hybrid
that basically sums up my musical taste in general. I love hip hop but I
don't think you can hear any hip hop influence in my music, at least not
sonically. My music is mostly plaintive yet direct. Sometimes my songs
reflect my own life our a fictional life. |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
I wanted
to be an artist because it was something that I realized I could do. I grew
up around music, whether it be my dads beatles and stones record collection
or the fact my grandmother taught piano. I had always been musical, it just
all started when I asked my parents to buy me a bass for my birthday, which
led to several more basses, than guitars. Needless to say music for me
became a phase that has yet to have ended. I am a musician because it makes
me feel better and in away is a way for me to express myself creatively.
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
If I had
to watch to celebrities wrestle it would be tom waits and iggy pop. for
those of you who saw the documentary coffee and cigarettes you would know
the tension between the two in their scene together. I think it would be an
interesting fight. waits has the size on iggy, but iggy is one wiry dude.
also this would be an awesome fight! |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
gee I
suppose I dont fully understand this question, but hey if your playing in
front of no one you are still playing, so yes? |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
I look
like a lumberjack who'd check your oil so I'd say either mickey rourke or
ewan mcreggor if he gained some weight. |
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
I work at
record shop so I come across tons of artists that I think people should
check out. I really think people should check out dungen from sweden as well
as local artist william elliott whitmore. Dungen play amazing psych rock and
folk that just blew my mind. will is a friend of mine with a voice that
stirs like an old bluesman yet he's in his mid twenties. both his albums are
hauntingly beautiful and plain spoken, something I suppose influences me on
many levels. |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
geez this
is a tough one but here are 5 I absolutely love in no particular order
1.) Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
2.) Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
3.) my bloody valentine - loveless
4.) Tom Waits - Bone Machine
5.) Velvet Underground &
Nico |
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
1.)Ugly
Casanova - hotcha girls
2.) Wilco/billy bragg - mermaid ave 1 and 2
3.) erik b and rakim - paid in full
4.) tribe called quest - award tour
5.) neil young - everybody
knows this is nowhere |
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
I use all
mediums, I typically buy more cds than vinyl these days, but I always have
to say vinyl especially the older stuff. |
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
I would
change the whole power of our government and downsize our large corporations
that seem to have the most power in our country. |

Daniel Patrick Quinn of
Suilven Recordings
Suilven Recordings' owner and alt-folk artist Daniel Patrick
Quinn waxes lyrical about northern moors, speed bumps and banning guitar
music...
http://www.suilvenrecordings.com
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
Flawed,
rustic, non-urban. A hybrid of various unfashionable genres. |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
So I could
raise the profile of various neglected Northern localities and try and
counter-balance all the dross obviously. |
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
Grandad and Uncle Albert from Only Fools And Horses because
it would make good television. |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
None of it
really matters, even Shakespeare and Jesus will be entirely forgotten about
eventually. So let them get on with their gig. |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
Brian
Blessed, handsome enough and right sort of physique. |
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
David
Thomas and Two Pale Boys are really good, especially live. Jon Hassell has
always been terribly underrated. I don’t like that many contemporary bands,
but around Scotland the most interesting things I’ve heard/seen are Pinkie
Maclure & John Wills and Lucky Luke. |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
At the moment:
Brian Eno – Thursday Afternoon
Jon Hassell – Magic Realism: Aka/Darbari/Java
Electric Light Orchestra – On The Third Day
Mike Oldfield – Hergest Ridge
Nico – The Marble Index
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
I don’t
have a van or a band yet. But in the car it would be something off Miles
Davis’s “Bitches Brew”, the last track off a David Sylvian/Robert Fripp LP,
“The Wild Ones” by Suede, a Can bootleg tape of “Chain Reaction” from
Colchester 1975 and “Transmission” by Joy Division. |
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
Definitely
not MP3. Either of the others have their merits but cd cases have that
rather atrociously throwaway/product/transitory aspect to them. |
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
Get rid of all speed bumps. Improve the Right To Roam
legislation in England and Wales. Try and stop idiots from dragging the rest
of society down. Outlaw guitars and computers for a couple of years and see
if anything improves. |

David 'Dee' Kesler of Thee
More Shallows |

1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
A worried mole's heart accompanied by toy bells and storm
cloud orchestra. |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
To escape death. but it's not working. |
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
Steve Guttenberg and his dolphin
costar from Zeus and Roxanne. It would be an interesting low-end test of
the postulation that dolphins are smarter than us. |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
you'd have to ask the band, you dorks. |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
Chavo - Gregory Peck
Jason - Gary Coleman
Odessa - Whitney Houston
Dee - Dana Carvy
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
Minmae is an amazing, prolific band from Portland that has
written and released more great and varied songs than almost anyone else on
the planet.
Most bands that people trash
a bunch are well-known enough that people can trash them with a common point
of reference. Therefore I don't feel like they need any big defense. That
said, I like Bob Seger a lot. |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
blonde redhead - anything!
wire - chairs missing

neu! - anything!
aspera - birds fly (EP)

we don't listen to music in the van. unless it's Christian
talk radio or ACDC |

The Bad Machines
The currently touring loveliness that is The Bad Machines take time out to
answer our questions. This is what they thought... |
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |
M: Everyone always says
they don't know how to answer this question, but here it is - we sound
exactly like Shonen Knife meets Har Mar Superstar as produced by Martin
Hannett. P: It smells of
squirrel. Seriously though, it's the sound of a G3 going through a Boss
foot pedal. |
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
P: Making music was the
first thing we did, then putting the live show together was the result of
cabin fever. M: Yeah, his hair
was too big to stay in the bedroom. |
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
M + P: CC Allen and Wendy O
Williams - you know why. |
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
M: Where's that?
P: Is that near Brixton? |
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
P: Roadrunner.
M: Whil-e Coyote. |
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
P: Starcasm - great
band, great name. M: Dolly
Parton - people need to look beyond the boobs (which are magnificent, of
course). |
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
BM: Right now, we'd have
to say Beatles - White Album, MBV - Glider, JAMC - Psycho Candy, The Shins -
Chutes Too Narrow, Bright Eyes - Lifted, but it changes all the time (if you
asked us last week, Def Leppard, Gaye Bykers on Acid and Joy Division would
be in there.) P: But suffice
to say, Nu Rock is so fucking yawn. |
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
BM: Only five? That's a
short tour! Prince - If I was Your Grilfriend, Ace Frehley - Back In The New
York Groove, Bright Eyes - Bowl of Oranges, Grandaddy
- Now It's On, Human League -
Fascination |
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
BM: Vinyl, recorded onto
MP3 burnt onto a CD. P: I'd
like to bring back wax cylinders - now there was a format! |
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
P: Dunno, I don't pay
much attention to the law. M:
I'd legislate for world peace and free waterskiing. But if that didn't
happen, I'd change the law protecting Paris Hilton from public vivisection. |
