1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music?
I have no idea how we would sound in a nutshell, we are too
big to fit in one. however i guess it would sound very loud in such a
confined space. I guess sassy, saucy, stompy. |
|
|
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
|
|
to play shows, to travel, too get slated by kids in their
mams tight jeans for not being 'scene' enough. to play madison square
gardens like zepplin. |
|
|
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
|
|
bono and paul mcartney, in a cage fight armed only with ice
axes and rabid dogs, in a fight to the death. |
|
|
4.
If a band plays in an empty hall in Stoke, do they really
make a sound? |
|
|
no, but if you transported the empty hall and stoke in its
entirety into madison square gardens it would sound beauts. |
|
|
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
|
|
we hear its already in the planning. Martin Short, Steve
Martin and Chevy Chase (Scott, Paul and Dave respectively) are all signed up
for it. its going to be called '3 Amigos Rock The Party'. Final scene is in
Madison Square Gardens. |
|
|
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
|
|
erase errata are the most underrated band of all time. A band
that sings songs about Owls hunting meat should be playing Madison Square
Gardens every night. |
|
|
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
|
|

Free- 'Live'
Jesus Lizard - 'Goat'

les savy fav - this incentive
prince - i could never take the place of your man
led zepplin - poor tom |
|
|
9. CD, LP or MP3? |
|
|
mp3, although cd sounds way better than all of them. |
|
|
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
|
|
I'd create a law ensuring that every community has a fully
equiped and well staffed Youth Community centre open 24/7. A place where
kids can hang out, play, organise their own events, talk to adults who
listen and not feel like outcasts in a media paranoid nation. Also a replica
Madison Square Gardens to be built in every city. |

1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music?
Listenable. |

|
|
To get girls, obviously. |
|

3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
|
|
We would like to see Raymond
Burr wrestle himself, just to see how he would pull it off. |
|
|
4. Best and worst gig
experiences? |
|
|
Our worst gig was
probably that time when we were playing in Shoreditch. Nobody was there to
watch us except for the other bands, cause we were playing really early. And
the other bands weren't really into the same kind of music as we are. Let's
be diplomatic and call them... experimental. Anyway, we had a backing track,
and the sound engineer made the very interesting decision to play it through
a bass amp. We ended up playing all our songs backwards to see if anyone
noticed. We've had some really
good times at Nambucca. Like that time with the balloons. And a choir of 25
school kids in their uniforms, with clarinets. It sounded awful, but it was
fun. |
|
|
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
|
|
Anthony from Anthony and the
Johnsons. |
|
|
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
|
|
Semifinalists are really good.
Bearsuit are also good, especially live. The Ponys are also good. And
although Sufjan Stevens is pretty well known by now, I think he deserves to
be mentioned as well. We went to one of his gigs and it was like nothing
we'd seen before. |
|
|

Giles says: Remember
when you were 15 and everybody wanted to be a DJ, so everybody had a set of
1210s for Christmas? Digital cameras are the new 1210s - everybody says
they're a photographer because they took a photo that appeared on
suicidegirls.com or Vice magazine. Those people are villains.A hero is

1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music? |

Slightly lo-fi indie in an
alt. country fried bap served with a side order of 60's pop and roots rock.
|
|
|
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
|
|
Paul Simon and Jeff Lynne |

Syd Barrett |

|
Maybe...I'll tell you later. |
|
|
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
|
|
I'd say Paul Simon or Jeff
Lynne - is this getting predictable yet? |
|
|
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |

ELO are underrated -
especially the 1986 album "Balance of Power" - but I like it that way. So
does Karl Wallinger. |
|
|
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
|
|
Do live albums count? If so..

9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
|
|
Vinyl - without a doubt.
Nothing taste's better than a dinked 7" in company sleeve. But I couldn't do
without my holy mp3 jukebox. |
|
|
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
|
|
Simple. I'd be in charge of
Britain and bring in a new rule that weekends are extended for everyone to
include Mondays. Think about it, if everyone started working four day weeks
the country would have more leisure time, people would be happier. I'd also
abolish CDs and make 7" singles the main and compulsory format. |

How long

Chris Summerlin (Last
of the Real Hardmen)
LOTRHM creates Instrumental Fahey-esque
musings that will chill your bones and warm your cockles. |
|
|
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music?
It’s simple
instrumental guitar music, composed so as to hopefully not sound like the
vocals are missing though I am loathe to call them ‘pieces’ as it makes me
sound more of a wanker than I already do. It’s largely acoustic these days.
Sometimes joined by cello. Never too flash or technical, sometimes a little
wobbly. Maybe sometimes a little sinister. Always coming from the right
place though. |
|
|
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
|
|
The
reason I like playing in a band is that I love playing live more than
anything else and I’m also coming round to enjoying the studio too. But for
LOTRHM it’s different. I’ve never really actively sought out gigs or the
chance to put out records (though I am thankful both things continue to
happen), it’s more like something I do for myself. I started doing it
because my friend Ian jokingly suggested at a slightly difficult time in my
life that a solo gig would “really give me something to worry about” and
I’ve just been doing it since. It’s true to say that an increase in LOTRHM
gigs and activity usually coincides with some sort of mini life-crisis so I
suppose my answer is that doing this particular thing helps me sort my head
out. Crap answer. |
|
|
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
|
|
Kirsty
Allsop (of Location, Location, Location) and Sarah Beany (of Property
Ladder). The reason is that I enjoy both their TV programmes but can never
decide which is best and I think this solution would sort it once and for
all. Obviously, I would be the judge. |
|
|
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
|
|
Hmmm…I
have never been to Stoke. For the benefit of everyone making music purely
for their own amusement I would have to answer a big “Yes”. |
|
|
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
|
|
Even
though I can see it throwing up certain problems I would say without
hesitation: Eddie Murphy. |
|
|
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
|
|
Any
British band/artist. Seems like we’re all destined to open for our American
contemporaries forever and occasionally get a 2 line snidey, dismissive
review on some arsehole’s blog.
Some of
these bands are bigger than others but they’re all super under rated: The
Unit Ama, Soeza, Spin Spin The Dogs, The Big Bang, Felix, James Blackshaw,
Chris/Martin, Twinkie, Gareth Hardwick, Designer Babies, The Emmigrants,
Prints, Quack Quack, Joeyfat, The Notorious Hi-Fi Killers, Eska, Econoline,
Woman, The Telescopes, The Neon Set, Bullet Union, Like A Kind Of Matador,
Clambake…millions more…
And even
though he’s American, I think Preston Long is as under rated as they come. |
|
|
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
|
|
They
change every minute. At 08.33 on 4/11/05 they are:
Captain Beefheart – Clear Spot
John Coltrane – A Love Supreme
The Stooges – Fun House
John Fahey – Best Of 59-77
Sonny Sharrock – Black Woman |
|
|
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
|
|
Having
never toured with LOTRHM I’ll have to go from the few times I’ve got a lift
anywhere and it’s usually with my long suffering housemate Gareth who has to
sit and watch me play, get drunk and then sleep all the way home. The
current favourites for chomping the miles are:
Soundgarden – Rusty Cage
Silver Jews – Random Rules
The Jesus Lizard – Boilermaker
Golden – Hot
Dead Meadow – I Love You Too |
|
|
9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
|
|
Vinyl
every time – bigger artwork and better sound quality if you’ve got a good
record player. Plus, they last longer if you look after them. |
|
|
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
|
|
The date
and the neighbourhood I live in may have influenced my decision here but I
think I would ban the sale of fireworks. In Sneinton, at any rate. I would
also allow bands to break the speed limit to get to gigs. Thinking about it
I would also put a wall around London and make it it’s own country called
The London, which means we could move the capital of England somewhere nicer
and bands wouldn’t have to go and play in that cruddy shithole ever again. I
would also ban advertising because I think it’s creepy. And I would put a
crippling tax increase on 4x4 vehicles. And I would have a huge bronze
statue of Joe from Bilge Pump erected on the M1 coming into Leeds, like an
angel of the North but with a better arse. He would be in a dressing gown,
smiling and pointing to the road. Underneath it would say in huge letters
“THE
FUCKING CUNTS TREAT US LIKE PRICKS”. |

|
1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music?
Waves in the air
that the bits in your ear decode, but then I am, literally, an idiot.
Perhaps I would say, songs, the sound of indie rockers discovering folk/
country/ electronic music but still digging out Bee thousand, Bakesale and
Bug on occasion |
|
|
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
|
|
Indoor
work, no heavy lifting.. I was conned, I have played in the rain, sweltering
heat, and on one occasion it was so windy that my amp fell over. Also, only
this morning, I dropped an amp on my finger and it hasn’t stopped bleeding. |
|
|
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
|
|
I saw
celebrity wrestling once, I got up too early on a Sunday morning, it was
terrifying. Perhaps Paul Daniels V Derren Brown.. the Old guard V the new..
either way society is the real winner. |
|
|
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
|
|
Actually
both times we played in stoke there were some people, so I couldn’t say.
Judging by empty halls in other towns, the loudest noise is usually the
voice in my head saying WHY. |
|
|
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
|
|
that
monkey from Tarzan that grew old gracefully and painted pictures. |
|
|
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
|
|
MANY!
Last of the real hardmen from Nott’s is doing a record on
www.birdwar.com that I have already on super
limited clear acetate and it’s great (I was in this band for one gig
though).
I’m
being good from brighton are about to put out a great album on
www.jonsonfamily.com
Lords from Nottingham are about to put out an equally awesome record on
www.gringorecords.com
Soeza
from Bristol are probably the best live band in the UK, fantastic like
dexy’s midnight runners doing fugazi
I
had an inkling from Manchester are one of the only herky jerky gang of four
indie bands that I think are any good, they chuck a load of other elements
in too, their drummer’s also in another great band from Leeds called Quack
Quack who I heard recently on resonancefm WHICH ALSO DESERVES A SHOUT OUT.
www.resonancefm.com lots of great shows my fave’
is the glass shrimp show which goes out on Wednesday’s at 5pm.. not just cos
they’ve had me on either. They are always worth a listen, live sessions from
deerhoof, interviews with vashti Bunyan it’s all there!
Epideme
from brighton are great ramshackle shouting indie rock
Blood Red
shoes and Projections from Brighton both featuring Steve Ansell from cat on
form/ the Oedipus are great a boy girl punk rock duo and a really good
inventive rhthymic post hardcore trio respectively. Steve also played drums
on some new econoline material that he was engineering he is a great guy.
The Ik
Jan Cremers from Amsterdam are a great pavement/ sonic youth style indie
rock pop band
Thee More
Shallows from San Francisco are brilliant we played with them at the betsy
Trotwood which holds 40 people, they should have been playing somewhere much
bigger, very Yo La tengo well constructed indie rock stuff.
Jason
Anderson/ Wolf Colonel on K is amazing why aren’t people creaming for his
album “the Wreath” go and get it off itunes
Pattern
is Movement is another good thing that came out recently like an Americana
stereolab, awesome.
The
American analog set don’t get enough love in my opinion, I am currently

9. CD, vinyl or MP3? |
|
|
Vinyl for
me, though MP3’s (or Aiff’s do seem to be what I purchase most these days) |
|
|
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
|
|
Try and
persuade people to get more local, I’m not sure how but if people tried to
source more of their consumer goods closer to home, lived where they worked,
spent time in their local pub’s, shops/ parks then people might be more
invested in their surroundings and treat them (and the people in them)
better.. Not sure how I’d do this.. Shoot everyone in the foot and take
their cars away? Tie them to one another? I’d think of a way.

Budokan Fire
Described as "a pack of ranting bastards" (by
themselves!), newly-formed ska-punk band Budokan Fire celebrate the
completion of their debut EP by taking the Tasty Ten and ruminating on the
joys of watching muppets kick the crap out of celebrity Radio 2 DJs.

1. In a nutshell (or any
other shell for that matter) how would you describe your music?
Mike - Sounds like
it's about to shatter.
Morgs - Like a retard with a machine
gun.
Caz - Well catchy but clued up,
loike. |
|
|
2. What is the reason you
wanted to be in a band/be a performing artist? |
|
|
Mike - I had been DJ-ing
and producing on my own for too long. I wanted some lads to bounce off and
make use of the tracks I had been writing. Plus fronting is something I
naturally want to do. I have too much energy and it's gotta go somewhere!
Morgs - It keeps me off the streets and
also I can act like a complete loon and not get sectioned.
Caz - I just love the idea of
travelling about with a gang of mates writing songs and having the craic,
gypsy stylee. |
|
|
3. If you could watch two
celebrities wrestle, who would they be and why? |
|
|
Mike - Terry Wogan and
Zippy! Morgs - My mum and Liam
Gallegher cause I reckon she'd av im!!
Caz - Renee from "Ali McBeal" cos
she's a full bodied raunchy bitch and I favour the fuller figure. The other
celeb would be me in a few months time (please, God!) |
|
|
4. If a band plays in an
empty hall in Stoke, do they really make a sound? |
|
|
Mike - Doubt it, if they
had any sense they would look at each other and say "This is f*ckin sh*t,
what sort of c*nts are we agreeing to play an empty gig up here? Let's do
ourselves off the bridge!"
Morgs - They could always fart through the mic.
Caz - You're askin a philosophy
teacher 'ere and I can't even be bothered answering that! |
|
|
5. Who would you want to
play you in the movie version of your life? |
|
|
Mike - Freddie Kruger
Morgs - Gian Franco Zola on the axe
would be awesome.
Caz - Biff Byford (Saxon) in a rock
opera. |
|
|
6. Are there any new bands
that you have played with, or heard, that you think people should be more
aware of? Or for that matter, any bands the you feel are criminally
underrated? |
|
|
Mike - I have to say
that The Toyin Melody are rather spesh! Maximo Park have, for me, been
unrivalled in their songwriting and I hope they go huge - best gig I have
seen this year. Morgs - The
Roses should reform with me as their roadie. Also, check out my mate Si's
band: 586
Cas - I think Phoenix are an
incredibly under rated band. Such quality songwriting on Alphabet. No hype. |
|
|
7. What are your top five
favourite albums? |
|
|

1:Queen - A Day at the Races
2:The Specials - More Specials
3:The Clash - London Calling
4:Happy Mondays - Pills n' Thrills
5:Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Morgs:
1. Stone Roses - Stone Roses
2. Police - Regatta de Blanc
3 - Happy Mondays - Pills n' Thrills
4 - Led Zeppelin 1
5 - Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Caz (in no particular order):

Prodigy- Music for the Jilted Generation,
NWA -Straight Outta Compton,
Thin Lizzy- Black Rose (I can't leave that out) |
|
|
8. What are your top 5
tunes to listen to in the van while on tour? Collectively....no fighting! |
|
|
We ain't on tour yet so no c*nt
is answering this. |
|
|
9. Heroes and Villains? |
|
|
Mike - Hero: It's gotta
be Freddie Mercury! He was a class mentalist in spandex!
Villain: Michael BallMorgs -
Hero: my boy
Villain: his mum!!!
Caz - Heroes: Phil Lynnot, Ozzy,
Geezer, Chuck D,The Dalai Lama.
Villains: Chris Moyles, Ian Beale and any (other) abusers of human rights. |
|
|
10. If you were leader of
your country for a day what laws would you change? |
|
|
Mike - I would like to
run an utterly filthy and fantastical country where nothing is real and all
manner of excitement is paid for by the government. So I would make all
clubs and bars free and unlicensed and let people work 20 hour weeks but pay
heavy tax to cover all their binging. Fair?.
Morgs - Happy Hour on the hour every
hour (I think there might be a song in that).
Cas - I'd need some time to think
about that one. I 'd probably fuck things up royally in just a day. Is this
a Jim'll Fix It question? If so I would legislate all sorts of bold and
wonderful acts to be done to me during my day of fun - ooooohh! |
